Anzu in Sumerian means “he who knows the heavens” (An – heaven, Zu – to know). Anzu is a huge divine storm bird. It is so large that the flapping of its wings causes a storm and its flight is the south wind. It is depicted as a large bird with a lion’s head. However, some legends tell that when it was born, its beak was like a saw. Born from divine waters and mountain rocks. It is also described as the son of the bird goddess Siris, who, like his mother, can breathe fire and water.
Anzu is also known by the names Zu or Imdugud. Anzu worked as a servant to the main sky god Enlil, as a caretaker and guardian of his sanctuary. However, one day, in his quest and desire to control the course of all things, he stole the Tablets of Destiny and flew away with them to the mountains. The gods sent warriors and other gods to bring the Tablets of Destiny back.
According to various legends, Anzu was killed by various people, most often Ninurta, also Marduk, Ea or Belet-ili. The myth of the god, demon, divine bird (whatever you want) Anzu is later repeated in other myths and stories from Kronos and Uranus to the Gardens of Eden and the expulsion from paradise.
